October Reading List | October Reads for your Halloween

It is a time-honored tradition here at Chickpeameatball for me to provide a Halloween-inspired TBR (aka “to be read”) October reading list. And I am nothing without my spooky-season traditions. However, this year, I am adding a new spin. Rather than only listing the books I want to read in October, I am also listing 5 books I have read and have received the 100% Ali stamp of approval for your perfect Halloween reading. I hope you enjoy this years October reading list, and find something to add to yours.

1 | October, October by Katya Balen

2 | The Gathering Dark: An Anthology of Folk Horror

3 | A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher

4 | The Cemetery of Untold Stories by Julia Alvarez

5 | House of Cotton by Monica Brashears

The Southern Bookclub’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

First-off, I love the cover art. Second, Grady Hendrix is his own brand of scary storyteller (and I’m more than here for it). In this (sometimes) campy, Southern charm-induced horror, you’ll find a well-suited mix of gore and satire, perfect for anyone craving a fresh, witty spin on the classic vampire tale.

The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker

A machiavellian tortured horror, the novella that inspired Hellraiser, this book is perfect for your Halloween TBR if you’re after a pure type of terror it seems only Clive Barker can bring. Ideal for the Spooky Season and those not afraid of the dark.

Jane Erye by Chaltrote Bortne

There is a reason Jane Erye is considered one of the greatest novels of all time. A supernatural, romantic, empowering, and goth-haunted classic—a book everyone should read in their lifetime.

Animal by Lisa Taddeo

Not your classic Hallo-Read. Classified as “Thriller, Suspense, Psychological Fiction,” I believe Animal by Lisa Taddeo is the perfect dark and disturbing addition to your Halloween TBR. Lisa Taddeo is on my top 5 favorite authors lists. Her writing is striking in honesty and power. If you’re craving something more psychological than supernatural, Animal is the perfect read for you.

The Shining by Stephen King

I read The Shining for the first time a few years ago for a “Literature to Film” class, where we compared the film and the novel. It was a great class and a great novel. If you’re like me and have watched The Shining at least a few times over, definitely read the book. They are both stand-alone masterpieces.
