If you’re here for some hairy coo photos, you have come to the right blog.
Without considering everything that Scotland has to offer I can tell you some of the quick commodities that people seemingly can’t get enough of – kilts, castles, bagpipes, scotch, Nessie, and cows… but, not just any cows, the Highland Scottish Coos.
There is no doubt the Highland cows (pronounced locally coos) have a special place in my heart.

Aside from the darling photos I have compiled a few of the best places to find Highland cows during your visit to Scotland. Also included is a brief history behind these lovable creatures.
So, let’s get to the main question, where can I find Highland coos in Scotland?
While these guys can surely be spotted from afar when driving through the Scottish plains, especially in Cairngorm National Park. It is nice to know some spots where you can stop, get a good look, and snap some photos.
Near Loch Ness
This was my favorite location where we saw the coos. In fact, it is where the majority of these photos were captured.
The tea-shop is super cute with small amounts of produce for sale inside.

There are seats inside the shop or you can sit outside with views of the hairy cattle. Which do you think we opted for?

Located approximately 40 minutes from Loch Ness the Newton Hotel is described as a lovely property with vintage vibes.

I felt so lucky to be in Scotland during what appeared to be baby season. There were so many baby fuzzies. Perfect photo op.

Northern Scotland
Duirinish, Sky
Duirinish village is located north of Loch Ness, and is relished for its preserved township.

A location full of original charm, and an active farming community, Duirinish is a safe bet for Highland cattle.

Glasgow
Pollock County Park is the largest park located in Glasgow. Here you’ll find a combination of woodlands, and gardens with plenty to do.
Visit the Pollock house for a peek into the founding of the National Trust of Scotland or take a riverside walk, and of course spot yourself some Highland coos.

Edinburgh
Great location just five miles from the city center. We grabbed lunch from their brasserie, which has great views of the property, and golf course.

There is a slight walk from the parking lot to the location of the cattle. I recommended wearing good hiking/walking shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Trails are free, and there are other animals to enjoy along the way.
Located south of Edinburgh city. A five-star hotel with gardens, golf courses, and Scottish cuisine served at their restaurant.

Visit the gardens tearoom or take a stroll to enjoy the peacocks, and Highland cattle on the property.
Brief History of the Hairy Coo

Highland cattle have been around since the sixth centenary. To this day there is debate whether or not the fury cattle were originally residents of Scotland or if they were brought in by the Scandinavians during the invasion of Britain.
Their iconic look is also a subject of speculation. The best theory to date is that the Highland coos are a result of two breeds, Longifrons and Primigenius.
Despite the uncertainty behind their origin, there is no doubt that the Highland cattle played a significant role in the development of the Highlands of Scotland.
As cute and photogenic as these guys are they have served a purpose to the people of Scotland for many years. Specifically with Crofters, farmers of Scotland who lived off small-scale agriculture.

I hope you guys enjoyed the furry coo photos. Best of luck spotting your own Scottish Cows!

It would have been fun to pull the hair back out of the mamma’s eyes, with a pretty pink ribbon! LOL
