3 Simple Ways to Plan a Romantic Couples Camping Trip

I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but Greg and I have had some pretty epic camping trips together. We’ve hiked through the redwood forests of Big Sur, stargazed in the woods of Colorado, and even camped on the side of a mountain overlooking the California Coast. Oh yeah, and we must not forget or Colorado camping elopement!

Because I believe exploring the great outdoors is one of the most romantic and memorable activities you can do with your partner, and with so many details to consider, I decided to cover the topic in a post. So, here are three steps (plus a few extra fun lists) to plan the perfect retreat away with your honey-bunches of oatmeal.

1. Cozy Accommodations

The first step in planning any outdoor adventure is deciding where to go. You need to assess how long you have for the trip, determine if there are any amenities available at surrounding campsites, and ensure there is enough local wildlife or sights of interest to keep you busy during your stay. You also want to familiarize yourself with the area’s regulations before hitting the road. Some parks may not allow campfires or require permits for overnight stays, and honestly, what is camping without a cozy campfire?

2. Gather Your Essentials

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced camper, it helps prepare you for any eventuality. Don’t leave anything up to chance – double-check that all essential items like tents, sleeping bags, flashlights, and camping chairs are in order before packing them into your car. There is nothing less romantic than two stressed-out campers who are too busy worrying about the forgotten items to enjoy the experience truly. So take your time and ensure you have everything before setting off on your romantic camping adventure!

Fireside Specialty Meals

Meals bring us together, and there is nothing that makes you feel cozier than a delicious fireside meal after a long day of hiking. Here are some of my go-to camping meals.

Elevated Grilled Cheese Sandwiches | Who doesn’t love grilled cheese? Make this classic comfort food special by adding herbs and spices, vegetables like tomatoes, olives, and various kinds of cheese. Here are some delicious recipes.

Skillet Fajitas & Campfire Kabobs | For a delicious and easy-to-make meal that packs a flavorful punch, fajitas are an easy option. I go full veggie lover in our cast iron skillet. Or, if you’re looking for something a little similar but more versatile, go for the veggie kabobs. I love adding pineapple to my kabobs for some next-level flavor.

3. Five Fun Activities for Couples While Camping

Arriving at your destination marks the beginning of an exciting new adventure – it’s time to explore the great outdoors together. Why not start on a romantic hike around your campsite? Or go swimming in nearby lakes? Sometimes magic doesn’t just happen; sometimes, you have to make it happen.

Let these simple activities become part of special memories you can share forever. Playing board games and card games is one of my favorite things with my husband. When we road-tripped across California in 2018, he taught me how to play cribbage, which, as dull as it may sound to some, is one of my most cherished memories. Plus, after a long day of hiking and sightseeing, it’s a great way to relax and laugh together.

When done right, camping can be an incredibly romantic experience – even more so than staying at expensive resorts and hotels. Here’s a list of fun and romantic outdoor activities ideas for your next camping trip:

  1. Stargazing | One of the best ways to relax is simply slowing down. Lay out a cozy blanket and admire the stars. Gaze up into the starry expanse, look out for constellations or find your patterns, tell each other stories, and take in nature’s beauty.
  2. Play Card Games | Bring laughter and fun into your camping experience with card games. Greg and I love to play card games when we camp. One of our favorites is the Monopoly card game and Skip-Bo.
  3. Sunrise Hikes |Take an early morning hike, enjoying nature without the crowds and distractions. If camping near the coast, check early morning low tides for a bonus beach walk experience. Greg and I did this in Washington (photo below). It is joyous searching for the sea creatures in the tide pools.
  4. Have a Picnic | Why not make things extra special by packing a romantic picnic by the lake or in the woods. Prepare some snacks, drinks, and light refreshments that you can enjoy while taking fresh scents and stunning views.
  5. Take Photos Together | Bring a camera and preserve special moments before heading home.

No matter what activities you choose, being outdoors with your partner is an excellent way to create lasting memories.
