When it comes to making New Years Resolutions I think it is often overlooked because so many fail. The concept has almost become a bit of a joke in mainstream media.
So, why do our resolutions often fail? Well, it is hard (and just about completely unreasonable) for us to tell ourselves we need to change a list of things about ourselves just because the date on the calendar says so. Realistically, we know deep down these extensive changes we often place on ourselves are just too heavy – it can all become overwhelming and come crashing down.
I believe there is a way to avoid this post-New Years crash, and it lies in how we go about setting our goals.
What’s the Deal with Manifestation
It would be wonderful if we could paste some pictures on a board and suddenly have all of our dreams come true. But, we all know that is not how it works.
The key to truly manifesting our realities is taking proactive steps towards whatever our desires and goals are.

Manifesting, or the Law of Attraction, is essentially leading tangible events or elements into your life through action, attraction, and belief. As many experts in the field have pointed out, manifesting is far more than simply positive thinking. In reality, you are manifesting all of the time; but it’s important to reflect on what you are manifesting into your life. Every thought that becomes action, those actions leading to events, and events becoming life circumstances – this is all manifestation, the creation of our own reality.
To truly manifest is to be clear on your goals and intentions. I tell my husband all the time, “I can’t manifest your destiny. You are the only one who can manifest your own destiny” – It’s okay to laugh at that, my mom did; and told me she wanted to print that on a T-Shirt. Haha..

The point is, whatever it is you’re working towards, make your intentions clear.
Once you have the goals set in your mind, that’s where a vision board comes into play. It’s time to set your intentions, goals, and dreams into the Universe. Author Gabby Bernstein has the perfect words for describing this, “Manifesting is also known as co-creating because it’s a collaboration between you and the Universe.”
Why I Love Vision Boards
Every year for the last six years I have made a vision board to start my new year – it has become a tradition. I first heard of the idea of vision boards and manifestation from my Grandma Barbie when I was really young. She has had a vision board hanging in her room for as long as I can remember.
My Mom has taught numerous classes for vision board manifesting, and I have taught a few myself. I have done it enough times now that I believe in its power. From graduating college, to trips all around the world, even during the most difficult times of my life, my vision board has truly come in clutch – reminding me on a daily basis what it is I am working towards, and bringing that emotional sparkle of motivation when I am struggling most.
Steps to Creating Your Perfect Board
First, Identify What Your Goals or Intentions Are
These can be the same or very similar to the current (or previous) year. Don’t put the pressure on yourself to make drastic changes. Doing them every New Year means there are plenty of things I’ve redone on my boards. Some goals just take more time, and that is one-hundred-percent okay. In fact, it’s more than okay – that’s what life is about!

Make it fun! I love the overwhelming feeling of inspiration that washes over me when I am crafting a new board. Take your time to reflect on your true desires.
Next, Look for Some Motivational Quotes and Inspiring Photos
I am a crazy quote-lover. Throughout the year, I am highlighting things I like in books and writing all of the quotes I must remember in the notes section of my phone.
I included some of the mantra graphics I made for my own board at the bottom of the page.

I find some of the best content for images is on Pinterest. I know a lot of people who cut out magazines. When I was teaching after-school programs, I would do a vision board workshop with the students – bringing in loads of magazines for them to cut photos and stitch quotes to.

Gather All of Your Materials
Here is what you’ll need:
- Foam or paper poster board
- Glue sticks work just fine, but I much prefer double-sided tape. I usually purchase the thin scrapbooking strips of double-sided tape.
- Scissors
- Printouts

Lastly, Get Creative!
It’s all about having fun and being inspired!

Once you create exactly what you envision, hang it somewhere you can see it often. I have mine hung in my office, behind my bedroom door, in the bathroom, next to my nightstand – they have traveled all around.

How Do We Turn Pasted Photo’s Into Our Reality
Now that you have a stunning vision board to admire on-the-daily, let’s quickly talk about how to turn those photos into something set in reality!

One of the most important pieces of advice I can share on this is break down steps for each goal; incorporate these steps into your daily or weekly routine. The images act as a reminder to the things you truly want – the “things” you have taken the time to reflect on.
I hope everyone has a very Happy New Year! Remember to be kind to yourselves when setting new goals and intentions.
In the comment section below, let me know what you think of manifestation. Do you believe there is power in it? Have you ever made a vision board before?
